1864 Map of Amherst County, VA

In 1864 the Confederate Corps of Engineers created a map which included Amherst County. Copies of this map are available for purchase in our Gift Shop. If you have a map and would like to be able to use this index to places, the directions for creating the grid follow:

All gridlines are spaced one inch apart.

Beginning 5 and 3/8 inches from the left side of the map place the first vertical grid line.

Beginning 2 inches from the top of the map place the first horizontal grid line.

The row across the top is lettered "A" "B" "C" and so forth.

The column along the side is numbered "1" "2" "3" and so on.

With this grid in place you can use the index below to locate places identified on the map. Please note that this index is based on the map as prepared by the Confederate Corps of Engineers and that there are sometimes inconsistencies in spelling, etc., due to the engineers' lack of familiarity with the area. Some names may appear in this index twice - as they appear on the map and as they are more commonly known by local residents.
